Enjoy Summer Activities with Safety in Mind
Enjoy all of the fun activities that summer has to offer! From swimming to camping, it’s always important to be conscious of your safety. Here are some top reminders to help keep you, your friends and your family safe while making new memories:
- Bring a first aid kit on all of your summer adventures – include items such as adhesive bandages, antibiotic ointment, antiseptic wipes, gauze dressing pads, first aid tape roll, scissors, tweezers, gloves, and aspirin. Consider where you’re going and the number of adults and children to complete a robust first aid kid.
- Bring sunscreen and insect repellent on all of your outdoor adventures! Insect repellents containing DEET are the most effective.
- Prevent unsupervised access to water – employ the buddy system with adults, and provide adult supervision to children.
- Get out of the water at the first sign of lightning or rumble of thunder.
- Ensure that children and inexperienced swimmers wear properly fitted life jackets while in the water. And all boaters should adhere to state laws regarding Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs), which mandate wearing them while on the water, regardless of their swimming level.
- Always supervise a grill while it’s in use. Keep children and pets out of reach.
- Always supervise a campfire until it’s completely burnt out and cooled down. Learn more about fire safety while hiking or camping from the U.S. Forest Service.
- Inspect yourself carefully for insects or ticks after being outdoors or have someone else do it for you.
